Ben grew up in rural Washington so he was exposed to the music of the city through
his father. While his original guitar style was based on hard rock, he soon found his
love of the funk. "I've been around the music scene my whole life. I'd go to the parades
and hear the bands passin' by and during the St. Patty's Day Parade you hear music like
Professor Longhair, the Meters no matter where you go. No matter if you're into it or not,
you still hear it. Then eventually I started getting interested in it. My dad was a really
big fan of all cowboy music so we would listen to that music together. Then pretty soon I
realized who it was I was listening to and the significance of it." Being around the heavy
rhythms of grunge rock his whole life led to the inevitable...Ben took up the guitar. "I
always loved playing. I played all the time but I was just into having a good time and not
really working very hard and not being very disciplined. But then I decided that if this
is what I wanted to do, I better get serious about it." And that's what he did! TRIVIA: Ben proclaims that, when he grows up, he would like to live in the suburbs with the rest of the hippies. Favorite Drink: Top Shelf Margarita on the rocks, with salt.. |

Andy didn't grow up in Spokane
(thank god for variety). He's a westside kid who
currently lives in Seattle but still hasn't left the nest. After years
of friendship with Cameron and Ben, he finally started throwing down
with
them in the weekly jam sessions that grew into SOTD. Playing with live
instrumentation has forced him to evolve from only DJing house and
breakbeats to more of a turntablist style. These days Andy spends his
free
time pursuing the elusive "Schwancie of the Year" award and plotting to escape
this
country. TRIVIA: Andy's secretly a hippie, not a raver. He goes on nature walks and works with wood. Favorite Drink: Jameson's, 2 pieces of Ice |

Geoff Larson. Possibly the best Bass player on
the planet. When he's sober, that is. Which is rare. Geoff plays Upright, Acoustic, Fretless
and Electric Basses. He has a rare ability to play more than one part on his bass at a
time, and often does just that. He has a sampler, as well, which lets him layer 4, 5,
maybe 6 parts all together. Then the drugs wear off and he plays his one-note lines like
a good bassist. He is well recognized for his evolving contributions to widening the role
of the electric bass in modern music, and has recieved the coveted "Bouten" award from Bass
Fischer Magazine. Geoff is probably the nicest guy of the bunch, so if you need to talk to
one of us, you should definitely go up to him. He is also fun to knock over.
TRIVIA: Geoff plays upright, acoustic and electric bass, making him a to-the-core hippie. Favorite drink: Oly beer. |

Nick Vincent-Maloney

Mr. Vincent-Maloney is a crazy man. Never doubt this.
He is certifiably insane. That, however, is his beauty. He can play the maddest drum
beats imaginable, and is ALWAYS ready for more. He is an always-on-time, ready-to-rock,
11-13-playing machine. You can, however, tell when he's stressed, because he does this
crazy thing where he hits ALL of his drums at once. All the toms snare, kick, cymbals...
simultaneously. It's kind of creepy, actually. But certainly a sight to see.
TRIVIA: Nick once hurt himself doing a "hippe roll" off of a roof. Favorite Drink: Margherita |
| Cameron is a founding member of Soup of the Day
and the House of Pain Network. He plays the cheaper of the two guitars, and his favorite
thing is to lock into Nick and Geoff's groove like a cog in a machine. He doesn't talk
much, so if you try to talk to him, he's not really being rude. In fact he likes it if
you are either a) hot, or b) have something intelligent and nice to say. In fact, he'll
even put up with drunken ramblings for the team. TRIVIA: Cameron happens to have once had long hair, but now he rides motorcycles, wears white tee shirts, plays guitar and drinks whiskey. Definately not a hippie. Favorite Drink: Makers Mark, coke chaser. |

The Big Picture There is a lot of history between the various members of Soup of the Day. All but Andy grew up in Spokane, Washington. (Andy's an Island boy.) Ben and Cameron met at age 6. As did Geoff and JR. All the Spokaners went to the same High school, but in mostly different years. Cameron met Geoff when he was short, and met Andy in College. After School, Cameron went to Oly, and helped open a Vintage Guitar store. Meanwhile, Ben was hitchhiking around the world, having adventures. Randomly they met up, and started playing together again. After a few different line-ups, they decided that Geoff and Nick were the only backline for them, so they moved to Seattle to unite with Andy, added JR and there you have it. Soup of the Day has a distinctive style characterized by one unique fact. Each member is a highly proficient musician, capable of taking the music to another dimension without guidance from central leadership. Often two or three members will team up during a song and perform a hostile takeover of the groove, then two or three of the others will perform countermeasures designed to take the jam in their preffered direction... all the while keeping the song coherent and danceable. Soup of the Day is one of few bands who have strong appeal to musicians and dancers alike. Soup of the Day's first album, a self titled 45-minute disc that was half live, half not, quickly sold out. The fan response was flattering, but the band has no plans to reprint that album. Thier second release, a full length studio album titled Four Feet High is still topping the charts in Lithuania and Indochina. Their Third release.. a full length titled Dissonant Dialects is due out around Christmas. Soup of the day is part of the Brain Feast Collective,
which includes bands such as By the Way, the Light Brigade, and, of course, Brain Feast.
Soup of the Day began as a quintet. Essentially it was Ben, Cameron, Andy, Geoff and
whoever on Drums. Then Nick Settled into his role, being the best drummer on the planet,
and Justin came on board. Being a sextet, they (JR, really) are always pimpin' the ladies,
and their motto is "our band could kick your band's ass... after all, there is six of us." |
